In February 2016, the Northern Ireland Assembly voted in favour of an amendment contained within the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill (2015) to ban anyone from smoking in private vehicles (such as cars) carrying children. The Northern Ireland Assembly Research and Information Service published a paper relating to this amendment making reference to IPH work in this area.

A year long study of Irish third level students has found that 64% are highly active and are more active than the general population across comparable age groups. The Student Activity and Sports Study Ireland (SASSI) of over 250,000 third level students was launched 25 February 2016 by Student Sport Ireland at its offices at the National Sports Campus.

The Public Health Agency and Partners will be hosting the fifth Public Health Annual Scientific Conference in June. The theme of the Conference will be “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” It will focus on the economic case for prevention and the health benefits of public health interventions for our population. A call for abstracts is now open.

On 9 March 2016 Northern Ireland’s health and social care sites go smoke free. From No Smoking Day on 9 March, health and social care facilities and grounds will transform to be smoke free, meaning that smoking will not be allowed on site by staff, patients or visitors. This major step by the health and social care system in Northern Ireland is leading the way, helping to change the culture and highlight where smoking is unacceptable.
